The lynchpin solution and the reason for building the wireless LAN and deploying Mitel platforms, is BlackBerry MVS. MVS integrates IP-PBXs with BES platforms to provide extension functionality on the BlackBerry. Critically, it allows the BlackBerry to connect to a WiFi network and uses the wireless LAN to route calls in and out of the IP-PBX. The WiFi can either be private or public – e.g. at home or WiFi hotspots – meaning that mobile call costs can be dramatically reduced, especially for roaming travellers. Users do not have to “learn” a new softclient app on the BlackBerry, they simply make and receive calls as normal and MVS with the IP-PBX routes the call via the most cost-effective route automatically. Instead of using the GSM network as the call transit, LAN/WAN/Internet is used for internal routing with the fixed-line network being used for external calls. Just like a teleworker hardphone, the BlackBerry client establishes a VPN connection to MVS/IP-PBX and uses SIP for telephony service.

“We’d been chasing BlackBerry MVS for over 4 years, back to when it was still Ascendant Systems. We knew it was the right solution for us when it was ready and by being a field trial site for the IP-PBX integrated software load, we knew we’d have the opportunity to help to mould the product.” – Chris Sutcliffe, Group Finance & IT Director

“MVS has given us cost savings, an enterprise number and enterprise mailboxes, a single point of reporting and one bill.  It truly blurs the line between fixed and mobile and we've cut the number of desk phones we needed as a result, saving a lot of money.” – Jonathan Stannell, IT Project Manager

“Overall, we're delighted with what we've been able to achieve.  As a field trial site for Mitel MVS integration, we've helped get the product to where it need to be, and we've achieved what are expected to be phenomenal financial gains.  We've leveraged our large BlackBerry dependence by using them as full PBX extensions and we've been able to improve upon our customer service by using unified communications applications and services.” – Chris Sutcliffe, Group Finance & IT Director
