The Environment

Charterhouse Environmental Position

Charterhouse is extremely proud of its green credentials. We take our responsibilities to the environment and the world at large extremely seriously. We have made major strides in reducing our carbon footprint over several years and we continue to be committed to being more sustainable as an organisation.

Our CarbonNeutral Status

We annually audit and measure our carbon footprint, waste production and water consumption and take steps to reduce it further (in partnership with The CarbonNeutral Company). Combined with the purchase of carbon offsets, these activities ensure that we are "carbon positive" - e.g. we offset more than we consume, and we drive down our consumption annually.

Projects to Improve Our Sustainability

We believe strongly that vague policy statements are not enough; real action is needed. Recent and current steps taken by Charterhouse to improve our sustainability include:

  • Increased use of teleworking to reduce commuting footprint
  • Introduction of cycle-to-work scheme for employees
  • Introduction of "walking engineers" with travel cards instead of vans
  • Recycling of paper, magazines, cardboard, bottles, cans and packaging (saving 30 trees and 2,700 kg of CO2 in 2008-2009
  • Replacement of heating and lighting systems with energy-efficient units
  • Moving from hardcopy documents & processes to use of softcopy materials and online working practices
  • Use of print output management tools to keep paper consumption low

Green Supply Chain Management

We have selected to work with partners who have made a concerted and measurable effort to reduce areas such as power consumption in their products and their manufacturing. Examples include:

  • Sharp - rated #1 on the Nikkei for environmentally-conscious products
  • Canon - ISO14001 and Sunday Times Best Green Companies 2008 listed
  • Cisco - independently ranked as "greenest LAN switch manufacturer"
  • Mitel - independently verified as lowest power requirements of any IP telephony vendor
  • Gamma Telecom - Carbon Neutral and lowest "grams per minute" of any UK telecoms network
  • EasyNet - a CarbonNeutral company
  • T-Mobile - upgraded masts and sites to reduce energy consumption

Our solutions help customers to be greener by allowing them to be more energy efficient, to generate less paper, to recycle more, to travel less, to work more flexibly and to communicate electronically. Our solutions can reduce power consumption by up to 75%, reduce resource consumption by up to 40% and can eliminate unnecessary travel altogether.

Further information regarding the environment and how we can help can be found in this section. The above is by no means an exhaustive list; for more detail and a consultative visit, please contact us.
